Preventing Osteoporosis & Fractures… How To Avoid Brittle Bones

Preventing Osteoporosis & Fractures…how to Avoid Brittle Bones

Did you know …

70% of people over 65 with osteoporosis have never been screened and don’t know they have it?

AND

There are more osteoporosis related fractures yealy than breast cancer, strokes, and heart attacks combined?

This can happen to you unless you work to prevent it.

Osteoporosis is not just a disease of old people or of women.

People of all ages can have low bone density including men and young adults.  Children’s poor diets and lack of activity will give them a greater chance of having low bone density at a younger age.  We reach the peak of our bone mass at about age 30.

How might you know if you should be concerned about having low bone density or Osteoporosis?

  • You have had a low impact fracture.
  • You are losing height.
  • You have some of the risk factors for Osteoporosis
  • Your Bone Mineral Density test indicates bone loss (Ask Your Doctor to get a bone density scan)

What are risk factors for Osteoporosis?

  • Ethnicity
  • Poor diet
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Medical conditions
  • Some prescriptions may prevent calcium absorption
  • Other factors.

What Can you do?

  • Learn about getting the proper nutrition and supplementation. Give your body the nutrients it needs. The type and proper amount  of calcium as well as vitamin D are crucial to maintain healthy bones.
  • Learn proper weight bearing exercises and strategies to maintain strong bones.
  • Eliminate fall hazards in your home and avoid multi-tasking, carrying too much or heavy loads.
  • Work on balance,  foot mobility and ankle strength.
  • Maintain upright posture and strengthen your postural muscles.
  • Get a Bone Mineral Density test (DXA) & work with your doctor to monitor your bone density and ask questions about the side effects of any drugs you are taking.
  • Live a healthy lifestyle. Drinking soda, alcohol and smoking all increase your risk of Osteoporosis.
  • Make your health a priority and take responsibility to make healthy choices for your body and your future.

For Physical Fitness, Weight Training and Weight Management

Have you ever wondered why you need a cup of coffee every morning and then that coke or mountain dew during the afternoon? Maybe you are a full blown addict.  We all know these things are not good for us,  but how do we get out of the habit of artificially boosting our energy to get us through and still get through our day?  I encourage you to begin anew and learn how to use essential oils for fitness and find yourself not needing those nasty drinks to pep you up anymore.

On July 21, @ 12 pm MST (recorded Link) I will be hosting author, Adam Ringham who wrote Essentially Fit Essential Oils in Google Hangouts On Air.  His book is a comprehensive guide to using essential oils in conjunction with a workout plan, exercise regimen or in reaching your dieting goals.  After reading his book and personally interviewing him, I feel that his knowledge has to be shared with as many people as possible.  I know many people are figuratively and literally DYING TO KNOW what this man will share.  Are you one of them?

Adam is a husband and  a new dad. He also served our country in the  National Guard, and is a recovered junk food addict, so he can relate to just about anyone.

Removing Toxins & Weight Loss

Posted by on Apr 27, 2015 in Core | 1 comment

What does Removing the Toxins from our Bodies have to do with Weight loss?

Toxins are making us fat and sick.  Our bodies store toxic chemicals in our fat cells to protect our organs.

The more toxins we take in the more we gain weight.

guy eating cookie large

In this study by the Environmental Working Group, research discovered that even our babies have 287 chemicals in their umbilical cords at birth.  Of those 180 are known to cause cancer…217 are toxic to brain and nervous system…208 cause birth defects…

If you are are having troubles with your immune system, energy level and focus or if you’re beginning to have health issues chances are you need to reduce the toxins in your body.

According to natural health educator, Jen Springer,  you will have noticeable results within 3-4 weeks on our Cellulite Toxin Flush program using exclusively- Young Living Essential oils.  By simply eliminating toxins, people are losing inches and lbs. due to our essential oils dissolving the toxic fat and liberating the toxins from the body.

Gain Height Through Pilates Posture

Posture graphic

Good Posture V.s Poor PosturePosture enhancing Pilates Make you Taller?

What does Posture have to do with height?

Have you ever heard the saying, “Doing Pilates will make you taller?”

In reality Pilates teaches you to hold your optimal height.  When you use the core muscles unconsciously after a regular Pilates practice you will stand as tall as you were built to be. Don’t allow your body to be pulled closer to the ground for another day!

Here is an article teaching some useful exercises to elongate your spine and build muscle. http://bit.ly/spinalelongation

While these exercises are great, if you low bone density avoid any forward bending, rotation or side-bending especially if you are de-conditioned. For those with Osteoporosis or low bone density, please refer to http://www.therapilates.com/osteonews.html for more information or if you are in the Denver metro area please feel free to contact me at http://corealignpilates.com/contact for dates of “Bone Safe Pilates” workshops or visit http://Americanbonehealth.org for events in other states.

Foot Pain Solutions

Would you like relieve foot pain?

Santa came early this year to  my studio.  He was thinking about my clients with foot pain and wanted to give them some relief.  So, new to my Core Align Pilates studio I have a Balanced Body Foot Corrector.  Its original design and purpose was to release and strengthen the muscles in the foot.  These often over abused workhorses can throw off the body’s alignment and form hard to change movement patterns that haunt us as we age.

End pain. The foot corrector lifts the arch of the foot, and improves balance and gait.

The Foot Corrector strengthens and lifts the arch of the foot, and improves balance and gait.

The foot corrector is a great tool for athletes wanting to tune up their game, reprogram harmful foot  and ankle movement patterning. The foot corrector is for anyone wanting to have healthier feet and ankles.  Combine these exercises with a reformer leg and foot work out or  a CoreAlign® workout and you will be amazed at the results.

Body aches will disappear and you will find yourself moving in a way reminiscent of your younger years.  If you are an athlete at any level this work will save your joints and allow your to perform with less chance of injury.

Not sure Pilates or CoreAlign® is for you?  Take my Free Odyssey RX Self Assessment and find out today.  Looking for just a tune up?  Call for our New Year’s special to get you on the right track for the New Year.

Pilates – How to Start

Pilates – How and Where to Begin?

Return To Life by Joseph Pilates

Pilates, or Contrology, as Joseph Pilates taught was a mind and body practice that builds upon itself over many sessions and classes and results in whole body health.

What Style of Pilates is Right for You?

In Devra Swiger’s blog post http://bit.ly/PilatesStyle, she compares the “classical” vs. “contemporary” styles of Pilates.  In summary, Classical style teachers profess to stay true to the original teachings of Joseph Pilates.

Joseph Pilates was himself an innovator and continually evolved his methods and equipment. Every teacher who learned from Pilates came from a different background and gained a unique understanding of Pilates work.  Contemporary Pilates stems from this evolution.

Finding a Qualified Teacher

The Pilates Method Alliance (PMA),  http://bit.ly/pmacert is a 3rd party certifying organization. Instructors must first complete a “comprehensive” training program to qualify. The PMA-CPT® is a NCCA accredited certification.  Not all competent teachers have  this certification.  However, the PMA is a good place to start looking for a competent teacher, or learn questions to ask a prospective teacher.   Pilates training programs/schools offer their own certification but are not the same as a 3rd party certification.

Are wondering if Pilates is right for you?

Find out what a difference Pilates can make in your life by taking my free- three minute Odyssey Rx self-assessment  and begin your journey toward greater vitality and a more active lifestyle.
